ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Students at Ivy Elementary School honored the veterans in their lives with a special assembly Friday.

They read poems, sang songs and heard from a local Army veteran about the importance of Veterans Day.

Students were able to give a flower to a special veteran in their lives.

Fifth-grader Raegan Van Bremen gave a flower to her dad, an Air Force veteran, and her grandfather, a Navy veteran.

"We wanted to honor more veterans and because I wanted to honor my grandpa. They fought for us and for our freedom," she said.

"It's an honor to come here and have these little youngsters recognize what you've done, for those that aren't here and the ones that were here. So, I'm glad they're paying attention to the veterans,” her grandfather Mark Van Bremen said.

Ivy Elementary announced at the assembly that they started a Purple Star program, which helps children in military families adjust when they relocate to new schools.
