ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Just a couple of hours left to place a bid for The Cedar of Lebanon table built from a tree on James Madison Montpelier.

The table was transformed by a local artisan from a Cedar of Lebanon tree on the property. The tree dates back to the mid-19th century. Known as a “witness tree,” meaning the tree was present for many of the cultural events including the lives of the enslaved, their contribution and emancipation.

“There is so much to be down and so much more to be done. You know this is American History and we want to be able to tell all of American history,” Rev. Larry Walker President of the Montpelier Descendants Committee, said.

Bidding starts at $5,000 and proceeds fund the archaeological investigation at the burial ground that is the final resting place of over 250 enslaved people at Montpelier.

Bidding ends Monday at 12 a.m.
