CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Skill games, like the Queen of Virginia machines at gas stations, will be banned as of January first in Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

The announcement comes after a Supreme Court ruling made the machines illegal.

"It's affecting my business," said Prashanna Tamang, owner of the Marathon market on Rio Road. His customers come for the skill games.

"Customers who come to play the machines, they're going to get some snacks or some drinks or some other things from the store as well. So, if there is no machines they're not going to come up," he said.

He said he understands the problems the games can cause, but he hasn't seen it much locally.

"What I have heard from other cities is that there are people busting down machines, people are getting mad, people are losing a lot of monies. Charlottesville's a pretty quiet place," Tamang said.

But, he said a full ban is extreme.

"There are other stores with like 20, 30 machines. It's like a casino in there, you know? But what I think they need to change the law is just have limited machines," he said.

The machines are owned by someone else. Tamang says the owner is going to pick them up and take them away by Jan. 1.

He said he hopes food keeps business strong.

"Instead of the machines we might put some more deli or hot food so people can still come here," he said.

Both Charlottesville and Albemarle County attorneys issued a statement Thursday, making sure they enforce the laws the same way.
