RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Now that 2024 has arrived, state tourism officials are looking to highlight some new and/or noteworthy additions.

The Virginia Tourism Corporation has put out its What’s New in 2024 guide, with sections devoted to specific regions of the Commonwealth.

One thing kicking off this year is a series of events leading up to the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.

The Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission is commemorating the country's independence across Virginia over the next two years.

Events start this week in Richmond and Fredericksburg. There will be book discussions, historical discussions, virtual road trips and much more.

But Virginia’s war history also includes the Civil War, World War I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

For example, the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford will be commemorating the 80th anniversary of the amphibious invasion of France during WWII this June.

Other big anniversaries this year are the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival marking 100 years and the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival turning 50.

Virginia is home to numerous food, craft beverages, wine and other trails highlighting regional fare.

A new one in the Richmond area is the Richmond Region Mimosa Trail, which is a self-guided tour to more than 40 restaurants with mimosa specials and brunch options.

Thrill seekers will be pleased to hear that the iconic Loch Ness Monster roller coaster at Busch Gardens is reopening this spring, following a full restoration project.

Virginia also has options for people interested in music, the outdoors, history, glass blowing, disc golf and more.
