CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Wes Gobble has added another element to the long Albemarle-Western Albemarle rivalry. Just last season, he was on the other side, lacing it up for the Warriors.

"I feel like every one knew that I transferred to the rival school, so it's always going to be a little bit heated, but I like that type of stuff," Gobble said.

"It was a shock to us," Albemarle basketball coach Greg Maynard said. "We didn't even realize he was planning on transferring and he's really just jumped right in and contributed to our success this past year."

That impact was most clear a couple weeks ago when he helped the Patriots win the Holiday Classic, sinking the game-winning free throws against his former school.

"He's a very clutch player and he showed it in that tournament," Maynard said. "He wanted the ball at that time in the game and they called a timeout to ice him and I said 'Wes you got this. I'm counting on you. You got these two' and he did. "

His addition has not only provided the Patriots another playmaker, but another high volume scorer pair with fellow senior Ben Wesson.

"Ben [Wesson] is like that," Gobble said. "Over the summer, we played a bunch of pick and worked out one-on-one with each other and we just knew we had some chemistry and if I'm not hitting, I know Ben is going to be hitting and if Ben is not hitting, he knows I'm going to be hitting, so it's just a perfect mix."

"It's nice that the other teams can't just isolate on him the whole time, Maynard said. "We got someone who can also come on the other wing and put it in the hole."

Gobble's time at Albemarle will soon come to an end, but he plans to continue his basketball career with a couple Division II offers to his name.

"It was definitely my goal to play after high school and the recruiting process is kind of crazy and it can get hectic sometimes," Gobble said. "My mind is trying to win for this school and I'll decide after the season."
