CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Red Cross is seeing the lowest turnout of blood donors in more than 20 years and it's making a plea for donations.

Bill Brent with the Red Cross, said more people are eligible to donate now than they were 20 years ago, so he’s asking people to check their eligibility.

He said that the demand for blood is much higher than the supply.

"If everybody that could give blood gave just once a year, there would never be a blood shortage. But if we could get those folks who donate once a year to donate twice, that helps," Brent said.

A good place to start is at the Broadcasters for Blood Drive, which is all day on Monday at the DoubleTree Hotel off Route 29.

Anyone who donates on Monday and throughout January will be entered to win two Super Bowl tickets.
