CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Although Xavier Johnson with Albemarle Towing says car-to-building crashes happen more often than people think, he was still stunned to see the extent of the damage after an 82-year-old man crashed into the DMV on Monday.

“Very wild scene, as you can see. You don't quite know what to expect if the car is inside or outside, but definitely a wild scene,” Johnson said.

It happened just before 9:30 a.m. when Albemarle County Fire Rescue received reports of a car crashing into the facility off Abbey Road.

While no one was seriously hurt, one pedestrian who was inside the building at the time of the crash was treated for minor issues.

The 82-year-old driver was charged with reckless driving in the parking lot.

It appears as if the car came up on the sidewalk went through the corner of the building and came out the other side.

Jillian Cowherd from the DMV says crews were able to fix the damage to open as scheduled on Tuesday.

Cowherd also mentioned that this is not the first time the DMV has seen an ironic accident like this.

“This is the first one for me in this particular role, but I have heard of this happening before," Cowherd said.

The DMV will continue to update the public through their account on X, formerly known as Twitter.
