ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Rescue crews helped a dog that got stuck in a Crozet-area pond on Tuesday morning.

The Western Albemarle Rescue Squad responded around 9:10 a.m. to a pond on Cathaross Lane.

The dog reportedly stepped onto thin ice and fell into the water.

The dog was safely rescued and its owner took it to a vet for treatment.

Rescue officials urge people to not walk on any iced-over lake or pond surfaces.

While recent very cold weather has caused many waterways to ice over, the thickness of the ice can be difficult to judge.

And more recent warmer weather means some of the ice has been melting.

The Albemarle County Department of Fire Rescue was also on hand to assist with this incident.
