CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS)-- Coming off an upset road victory against top ranked Florida State the Cavaliers suffered a demoralizing 56-53 loss to Pitt. The loss handed Pitt their first ACC win of the season and their first win in Charlottesville since 2016.

Pitt jumped out first using a 7-0 run to build up a 13-4 lead in the first quarter. The Cavaliers would warm up on offense though thanks to a pair of threes from Paris Clark and Kymora Johnson. Those threes would help fuel a 9-0 run to end the first quarter down by just 3.

Virginia become to take command by the end of the half as Johnson drained a three to tie up the game and then later shot another one from behind the line to send the 'Hoos up by 3 heading into the locker room. Johnson went a  perfect 3 for 3 from behind the arc in the first half but 11 turnovers allowed seven points for the Panthers.

Pitt reclaimed the game coming right out of the half scoring 12 straight points, holding Virginia scoreless for over 5 minutes. Pitt outscored Virginia 24-3 in the quarter and at one point led by as many as 18 points. With Pitt threatening to run away with it Virginia clawed their back into the game in the 4th quarter. Olivia McGhee's three pointer highlighted a 12-0 by the Cavaliers to trim the deficit. With two minutes remaining Virginia began pressing and forced three turnovers. A 3-pointer from Sam Brunelle with 13 seconds remaining cut the Panthers’ lead to four, 56-52 but in the end it just wasn't enough as the Cavaliers fell 56-53.

Reigning ACC Rookie of the Week Kymora Johnson led the 'Hoos with 17 points. With the win, the Panthers evened the all-time series, 7-7, and snapped a four-game losing skid in John Paul Jones Arena.
