RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A new state program aims to engage young people in democracy.

The League of Women Voters of Virginia has launched a Youth Council program, which will be open to second-, third- and fourth-year high school students in the Commonwealth.

According to a release, participating students will be involved in a number of state and local LWV projects for a year.

Throughout the year, there will be three cohorts of 10 students, with cohorts starting in May, September and December.

Youth Council members may work on assisting local league voter registration drivers, social media videos, graphics, Get Out the Vote campaigns at school, pre-registration programs for 16-year-olds and more.

The release says these positions will be unpaid, but participants will be able to get letters of honor and/or school credit hours for completing the program.
