CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Financial Times has released its Top 100 global business schools ranking and the University of Virginia Darden School of Business is in the top 20.

According to a release, this makes Darden the top overall public business school in the world, with it improving in several categories in the annual ranking and climbing from the third spot last year.

Overall, Darden comes in at 16 in the world, on a list that is topped by the University of Pennsylvania: Wharton, Insead, and Columbia Business School.

In the United States, Darden is ranked 11th.

The ranking considers a variety of factors, such as value for money, alumni aims achieved, diversity, academic research, environmental policies, and salary information.

Darden came in fourth for overall student satisfaction, second for MBA aims achieved, second for carbon footprint, fourth for alumni satisfaction (not used in calculating rankings), sixth for alumni network, and 10th for career service.

The release says the full-time MBA Class of 2023 at Darden reported the highest mean starting salary in school history for the fifth year in a row, averaging $167,899 base.

The median started salary was $175,000 for the second year in a row, which is a record high.
