CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Samson Miller, the head coach, has taken the Wahoo Dive Club from zero to 100 in just a few years.

“We have a really special community here at Wahoo Dive Club and everyone is really invested in making it the best it can be,” said Miller.

Creating the supportive community was easy, but the dive club is missing one key piece: an indoor space where the athletes can practice all year round.

Miller came up with a plan to boost high school diving by raising more than $20,000 in less than two months and creating a tent at Fairview Pool over the diving well.

“Now that we’ve had 20 hours a week to train, we’ve had three state champions this season, two at Albemarle High School and one at Western Albemarle High School, and we just sent our first kid to the Junior National Championships in California,” Miller said.

And not only has the diving club grown in numbers, but Wahoo Dive Club has been able to let students know about a sport they did not even think to try.

“I’ve been able to experience competitions and I really hope to just keep growing and seeing the team evolve,” said Caitlin Bernard, a junior at Western Albemarle High School.

“I’ve made a bunch of new friends on the team, everyone on the team is the sweetest and so fun to be around. And I hope to experience more competitions and continue growing as a diver,” said Gracie Synder, a junior at Western Albemarle High School.

The Wahoo Dive Club is excited to have the community’s help to not only help divers, but help Charlottesville become a hub for world-class divers.

“Really, as we try to think about what the next year or two look like, we want to be able to grow on the growth we’ve had in the scholastic system and the growth that we’ve had in the young kids, and really be able to offer that to anyone, and right now, we’re still so limited because of the infrastructure that we have,” said Jeff Vergales, the president of the Wahoo Dive Club.

The Wahoo Dive Club will have fundraisers all summer to get that indoor space.
