CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Applications are now being accepted to an apprenticeship program at the University of Virginia Facilities Management.

According to a release, the program offers paid on-the-job training and technical education in carpentry, masonry, HVAC, plumbing and electrical.

Applications will be accepted through May 5, but people will have a chance to learn more about the program in person on April 10.

The UVA Apprenticeship Program Job Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Alumni Hall on Emmet Street South.

During the fair, attendees will be able to hear from current apprentices and program graduates.

They will also have the chance to talk to local businesses that offer trade apprenticeships.

People who are hired through the UVA Apprenticeship Program will start in July. By their start date, they must be at least 16 years old, hold a high school diploma or an equivalent General Educational Development certificate, and be able to meet the physical requirements of the position.

Previous experience in a trade is not needed.

The UVA Apprenticeship Program has been around for 42 years and was the first of its kind created by a state agency in Virginia.
