ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Albemarle County Public Schools has joined a class action suit against popular social media platforms.

The decision comes just days after a student was taken into custody for allegedly threatening Albemarle High School and its teachers on social media.

The lawsuit was filed in October of 2022. Defendants include Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Snapchat.

The suit alleges that social media platforms fail to adequately warn users about the mental health risks associated with their use.

Those risks include addiction, suicidal ideation, anxiety, depression and eating disorders.

ACPS said if the lawsuit goes its way, it could recover money to treat student mental health and fund more mental health programs in the future.

Albemarle is far from the first school district to get on board. Plaintiffs include school districts from all over the country including California, Pennsylvania and Nebraska.

The case is being handled in federal court in California.
