ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A man from Indiana was stopped from getting on a local flight after a weapon was spotted in his carry-on bag.

According to a release, Transportation Security Administration officers at the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport stopped the man at a security checkpoint on Tuesday.

A 9mm firearm loaded with 11 bullets was detected as the man entered the checkpoint, and after the X-ray unit alerted officers, a closer inspection was conducted.

The man faces a financial civil penalty for bringing a gun to a TSA security checkpoint. That penalty can get as high as $15,000, depending on the circumstances.

This is the first firearm caught at CHO so far this year.

In 2023, 6,735 firearms were stopped at airport security checkpoints all across the country. Of those weapons, 93 percent were loaded.
