CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A local nonprofit that provides early childhood learning programs and more for disadvantaged children is getting a big boost thanks to University of Virginia School of Law students.

The students recently hosted teams from 39 law schools for the annual North Grounds Softball League Invitational.

According to a release, the charity event raised $40,000 for ReadyKids, setting a record for the invitational.

This is the 41st year for the event, which involves 180 volunteers.

Tournament co-director Grace Stevens says setting a fundraising record made the entire weekend feel bigger than softball.

“I am proud that a primary purpose of the invitational is to give back to the local community that makes Charlottesville a great place to live for all of our UVA Law students, faculty and staff,” she said.

More than 1,100 students from across the eastern United States came to Charlottesville for the invitational. Teams came from as far away as New England, Missouri and Florida.
