CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- With all the changes taking place at Buford Middle School during its renovation project, something else that will be new at the renamed Charlottesville Middle School will be a mascot.

The Charlottesville City Schools division wants to hear from the community about what that new mascot could be.

There is a short list of potential mascots that district leaders think could represent the school: Black Knights (matching Charlottesville High School), another kind of “Knights,” Chargers or Monarchs.

CCS has launched an online survey where students, staff, families and members of the community can share feedback. The survey is available until April 30.

According to a release, the shortlist of potential mascots came from a community survey that was conducted in the fall, to which more than 1,000 responses were submitted.

Those responses included information about the new look and feel of the renovated school as well as ideas about a potential mascot.

CCS says the responses were divided about whether the new school should use the Black Knights mascot (or a variation such as Junior Knights) or if it should have an entirely different mascot.

The release says the Charger idea came from wanting to express a sense of energy and forward movement and because it shares the first four letters of Charlottesville.

And the other option, Monarch, would evoke kings and queens who might have inhabited the world of Black Knights as well as the iconic orange and black butterfly that can be seen in the area.

No matter what type of mascot is eventually chosen, CCS says the school’s colors will be orange and black.

Construction on the renovation project got underway in June 2023, and the school will take on its new name in the fall of 2025.

The renovation project will be completed by fall 2026.
