CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Tuesday was World Voice Day, and experts at UVA Health have discussed the common health challenges frequent speakers face.

World Voice Day aims to increase public awareness of the importance of vocal health and how to care for voice-related issues.

The voice provides the main tool for both semantic and emotional communication.

Dr. James Daniero, a UVA Health laryngologist who works at the Voice and Swallowing Clinic, says our vocal cords vibrate 100 to 200 times per second when we speak. Now, imagine professionals who need their voice to do their jobs.

"Teachers, professors, lawyers, we see a lot of singers. We have a special clinic made up of ear, nose and throat doctors who are specifically trained in voice, and then speech-language pathologists who specialize in voice to help rehabilitate patients that suffer from voice problems," he said.

To celebrate World Voice Day, Daniero also previewed a concert that will take place this Saturday at Eastwood Farm and Winery to raise money for the Music Health Alliance, a nonprofit providing healthcare resources for folks in the music industry. It will last from 5 to 8 p.m.
