CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Charlottesville Tom Sox are getting ready to head back to the dugout in the coming weeks. But this season, they have a new president, and she has some big aspirations for the 2024 season.

“It's just so much more than baseball,” Charlottesville Tom Sox President Chesley Mullins said.

Meet Chesley Mullins, a local mother of two youth baseball players and the first female president with the Charlottesville Tom Sox baseball organization that started back in 2015.

“I think its hugely important that we have female representation. We have a very different view about operations, the impact that sports have on careers and family life, and how things are done,” Mullins said.

And while making history for the Tom Sox, Mullins says she hopes to inspire female representation to younger generations.

“Our perspective matters, and I think it is really important to see the women that we bring through our internship program go on to do great things in sports,” Mullins said.

Since becoming president, Mullins has wasted no time furthering the Tom Sox involvement with the community.

“A lot of people in Charlottesville still don’t know about us, so we have really focused on getting the word out about the Tom Sox and what we bring to the community,” Mullins said.

Leading up to the season Mullins says the Tom Sox will be out and about engaging with the people of Charlottesville at community wide events such as Fridays After Five to improve their connection.

“The initiative is to be out in the community more and more and be visible,” Mullins said.

As a nonprofit, Mullins said that the relationship with the community and their sponsors is their lifeline.

“In the ways we want to give back we need funding to do that,” Mullins said.

Prior to the first pitch in June, the Tom Sox will be holding events for the public to engage with the team as well as donate to continuing growing the organization.
