ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Albemarle County officials say the Housing Voucher Waiting Lists for several facilities will be opening soon.

According to a release, the waiting lists for Tenant-Based, Treesdale two-bedroom, Treesdale three-bedroom, Crozet Meadows, The Crossings at Fourth and Preston, and Scottsville Schools voucher programs will open at 10 a.m. on May 6.

The waiting lists will only be open until 4 p.m. May 13.

The programs help people with affordable housing by providing monthly rental subsidies.

The release says the voucher program was designed to help eligible families with housing needs by having these participants pay about 30 percent of their adjusted income toward rent and the Albemarle County Office of Housing paying the rest through funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

After a family is admitted to the waiting list, ACOH will rank them and consider their local preferences, which can help families in certain situations get to the top of the waiting list.

Preferences include those who are experiencing and/or who have previously experienced homelessness; families that live, work or have been hired to work in Albemarle County; current members of the U.S. Armed Forces, veterans who were discharged or released from services under conditions other than dishonorable, or surviving spouses of veterans; families that include victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault or stalking; and disabled persons or families with a disabled member.

Demand to get on the waiting list is high, so the Albemarle County Department of Human Service’s Office of Housing uses a lottery-based waiting list system.

The release says that once the application period has closed, complete applications are sorted at random and a fixed number of applicants will be placed into the spots that are available.

Applications must be submitted online through ACOH’s Housing Portal. Paper applications will not be provided or accepted.

Applicants are encouraged to apply to as many waiting lists for which they are eligible. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
