MADISON COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- One month after the Madison Roller Hockey Rink was destroyed by a forest fire, community members have donated $14,000 for the rebuilding process.

“For the dream to happen, it takes moving mountains,” League Administrator Tom Chew said.

The hockey league has planned to move the rink to recreation development at Hoover Ridge park for over two years. The fire made them move a potential construction date forward.

"Trees are over 100 yards away. We're still a little worried about it, we might come out with our own chainsaws and cut them down, because we don't need another wildfire going on over here," Chew said.

But, there's a lot of money left to raise.

“The new rink without a surface underneath it, just the board and the tiles, and having that installed is like $160,000, 180,000,” Chew said.

Lindsay Von Herbulis with Parks and Recreation said for the entire recreation development to be fully finished, they need $500,000.

"It's happening a lot faster than I ever dreamed it would. I would love for us to break ground by the end of the year with a total completion date by 2026 with everything," she said.

The youth league starts back up in November. Chew said by then they'll need to decide where the kids will play.

"The important thing is not to lose it for the kids. You lose a lot of kids nowadays. You lose them to electronics and other interests. So, we want to continue to develop these kids," he said.
