CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A man accused of trying to kidnap a University of Virginia student has pleaded guilty to charges.

James Robert Allen of Suffolk appeared in a Charlottesville courtroom on Tuesday.

The 41-year-old pleaded to a charge of abduction by force or intimidation and malicious wounding.

The charges stemmed from an incident that occurred in the area of Burnley, Cabell and Grady avenues on Oct. 4.

Allen was accused of trying to grab a female student who was walking in the area, trying to strangle her and then kidnap her.

Prosecutors say he told the victim he was going to kill her.

The victim was able to fight back, and the struggle caused Allen to crash his vehicle.

Allen was arrested the next day in Louisa County.

In court, the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office detailed injuries suffered by the victim, including multiple abrasions to her face, stomach and arm. Her hands were also taped together.

Allen will be sentenced on Aug. 27 and faces up to 30 years in prison.
