LURAY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A popular trail in the Shenandoah National Park is closing for repairs.

According to a release, the Cedar Run Trail in the central part of the park will close for about two weeks beginning May 6.

Park officials say the trail has completely washed out and poses a risk of falling for people trying to use it.

They add that hikers often pair Cedar Run, with its multiple cascades and waterfalls, with Whiteoak Canyon to create a seven-mile loop.

Whiteoak Canyon will not be affected by the closure.

The release says the Cedar Run Trailhead is located at mile 54.6 on Skyline Drive and connects to Whiteoak near Syria.

Hikers will be able to enter the park at the boundary, but they will only be able to access Whiteoak Canyon Trail there.

The Whiteoak Canyon Trailhead on Skyline Drive is located at mile 42.6.

SNP says crews will hopefully complete the repairs by May 16.

The release says the steepness of the terrain does not allow a safe way to circumvent the eroded areas, so the entire trail will have to be closed while the repairs are underway and the crew works to mitigate future erosion issues.
