WASHINGTON (CBS19 NEWS) -- A police officer from Nelson County who was killed in the line of duty last year will be added to a national memorial for the fallen.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund announced on Thursday that the names of 282 officers who died in the line of duty will be added to the National Law Enforcement Memorial this year.

According to a release, the names will be engraved on the walls of the memorial this month and then properly dedicated during the annual Candlelight Vigil on the National Mall on May 13.

Mark Christopher Wagner II, a Wintergreen Police Department officer who was shot and killed while responding to an assault call on June 16, 2023, is one of the officers being added to the memorial.

Another Virginia officer whose name is being added is Joseph Edward Carey, Sr., who served with the Brodnax Police Department and was killed on Dec. 16, 2022.

Their names are included on the 2024 Roll Call of Heroes, featuring the names of official Line-of-Duty Fallen Heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“As we come together again this year to commemorate the lives of fallen officers, we recognize the profound sacrifice they made in service to their communities and country,” said William Alexander, CEO of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. “Their memory remains a testament to valor and selflessness; two core tenets that a law enforcement officer abides by when being sworn in to service. This solemn ceremony encourages us to never forget their enduring legacy of service and sacrifice.”

Of the names being added to the memorial, 118 are federal, state, tribal and local law enforcement officers who were killed in 2023. The rest come from previous years and have had their cases approved by the NLEOMF’s research department.

With the 282 names being added, there will now be more than 24,000 names engraved on the memorial, representing 50 states, U.S. territories, federal law enforcement, campus and military police agencies, and Washington, D.C.

The release says the total number of line-of-duty deaths in 2023 was 49 percent down compared to 2022.

The vigil will be taking place during National Police Week. For more information, click here.
