CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Women in science and medicine at UVA are celebrating a big milestone.

Females have been an active part in the university’s schools of science and medicine for an entire century, and they were recognized for their accomplishments and growth within the university on Thursday.

It all started back in January 1920, when the Board of Visitors passed a resolution allowing women to be admitted into graduate programs and professional schools.

That year, 17 women entered the university, four of which enrolled in medicine. Now, UVA’s School of Medicine Class of 2027 is majority women with 53% of the class of 2027 being female.

Dr. Alyssa Cole Mixon and Dr. Kathryn Xixis say they can’t wait for women to continue to make an impact at UVA.

“I’d like to see more gender equity here at UVA and across the nation. On top of that I’d like to see more women in leadership positions,” said Mixon.

Thursday's celebration included a women-focused historical walking tour of UVA’s Grounds as well as a panel discussion with women leaders from UVA Health.
