CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. (CBS19 NEWS) –- After a several hour-long clash between pro-Palestinian protestors and law enforcement on Saturday that ended in multiple arrests, protestors returned to the University of Virginia grounds Sunday afternoon.

At the first organized protest, a group of nearly 100 people gathered at the Rotunda where students read statements.

“They gave me my charges after seven hours. Since I have been charged with trespassing at the University I attend and pay tuition to, Tim Longo has decided from this day forward, I am barred from entering grounds indefinitely,” one student read.

And they also chanted.

“35 thousand dead.”  “35 thousand dead.” “And you’re arresting kids instead?” “And you’re arresting kids instead?”

“Jim Ryan you can’t hide!” “Jim Ryan you can’t hide!” “You’re supporting genocide!” “You’re supporting genocide!”

These statements and chants were in response to the 25 arrests made on Saturday after the pro-Palestine protest on grounds was deemed an unlawful assembly by law enforcement after multiple warnings that their tents and loudspeakers violated UVA policy.

The second began around 2 p.m. and was an organized march of about 100 that went from the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers to UVA President Jim Ryan’s house.

“Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not rest! Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not rest! Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not rest,” students and other community members chanted as they marched.

At the end of the march in front of Ryan’s house, one student read a statement expressing frustration with how the university responded to the arrests made.

“We had to fend for ourselves,” he said, “We were not given any resources by UVA. His statement did not acknowledge any student safety, any support. It only shifted blame because that’s all they do. That’s all they care about! What do we say to that?”

“SHAME!” the crowd responded.

Both protests Sunday remained peaceful with no significant police presence – a vastly different scene from Saturday.
