GREENE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Derek Leake at Greene County Technical Education Center teaches his students every day to use their hands and what it is like to be a hard worker.

“He’s just a class-act human being and a really amazing teacher,” said Jess Peregoy, the principal of Greene County Technical Education Center.

What makes Leake stand out as an educator is the work he puts in to make sure his students succeed after they leave his classroom.

Leake has taken his students on numerous field trips to show them all the possibilities their future can hold, and continues to push them to excel in multiple areas.

Students leave Leake's classroom with motivation to become successful, and that passion would not be possible without Leake's determination and resources he provides to his students.

“Mr. Leake is an incredible instructor, he absolutely adores his kids, constantly makes sure that they are doing something hands-on, and preparing them for the industry,” said Peregoy.

Leake has created a new pathway in welding at the school, helps with electrical planning for the construction of the new building, and is a top-notch educator who genuinely cares about the well-being of his students.

“It’s all about the kids and making sure that they’re happy and learning,” said Leake.
