CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, Cpt. Kevin Miller with the Albemarle County Police Department spoke about responding to those kinds of calls.

"We are very aware of the fact that mental health response is a specialty response, and we train our officers for that, and partner with many different agencies throughout the community to make sure that we can serve people well," said Miller.

Members of the specially trained Crisis Intervention Team are frequently requested to work with people in mental health crisis.

Miller noted that, nationwide, calls for mental health services are up.

He said that drug abuse is often associated with people who have mental health conditions, but it's not a determining factor.
